By name alone, it’s easy to assume that chicken meat would be a better ingredient than chicken meal. This is not true, Chicken Meal was specifically chosen over Chicken Meat to be the lead protein source for Earthblend.

WHY?
Well, for one, dog food manufacturers are required by law to list ingredients in their order of % of weight, with the first ingredient being the ingredient that makes up the largest percentage of the food. The ingredient listing is where consumers are directed to look to decipher the quality of the dog food. Many dog foods that are claiming to be “protein-based”, Can actually list chicken meat as the lead ingredient, although in reality in its final form, this is not true. Chicken meat is preferred as an ingredient by most manufacturers because it is weighed BEFORE processing into its applicable recipe form. Chicken Meat’s make-up at the weighing is 60%- 70% water, which gets counted toward the weight. Chicken meat is cheaper to use, so the manufacturer increases his profit, while depriving the customer and his dog of the daily requirements for protein that they believe they are paying for. You see, chicken meat must still go through other preparation before it can become part of the dog food, and that removes the water leaving only the actual chicken which now weighs about 1/3rd of the total weight that was used to get that product first on the ingredient list, when it should be 6, 7, or depending on the other ingredients, even 10th. Chicken meal describes the state of the protein source as opposed to the quality. “Meal” simply means that it is already in a form that is ready to add into the dog food. It is 100% protein source in a dry form. This weight is a true count of the actual amount of protein the dog will actually get. Both chicken meal and turkey meal are the dry, rendered products from a combination of clean flesh and skin with or without accompanying bone, derived from the poultry, exclusive of feathers, heads, feet, and entrails. Earthblend is 73% to 75% digestible, which makes it one of the most digestible dog foods available and way ahead of leading grocery brands.
